Cricket match at the WACA ground

Born at the WACA.

The club emerged into WA cricket in 1889, known as the Federals. The following season the club was renamed as West Perth and won 3 premierships in the following decade, achieving success in the 1891-92, 1893-94 & 1894-95 seasons. The club played at the WACA ground for home matches. West Perth registered the colours of dark blue and red – colours synonymous with West Perth sporting teams.

Relegation & Premierships

In order to eliminate a bye round in the First Grade Competition, in 1935 the Cricket Council voted to drop West Perth along with 2 other clubs from First Grade. 2 seasons later West Perth were re-elected into the First Grade Competition.

During the harsh times of WW2, the Cricket Council changed the competition format to One-Day games to deal with the shortage of players. West Perth won premierships in 1940-41 & 1943-44 under wartime rules and won the flag again in 1947-48.

In 1970-71, the club won its most recent premiership.

Relocation &
Name Changes

In an effort to become a Test Match venue, the 1980’s saw the renovation of the WACA ground and the subsequent eviction of West Perth from its traditional home. After an agonising process of finding a new ground, 2 options were presented: The large complex at Gosnells, later to become Sutherlands Park of Gosnells Cricket Club, and the Willetton Sports Club. Due to the lobbying of die-hard administrators and members of the club, Willetton Sports Club was chosen. To coincide with the location change, the club changed its name to Southern Districts.

After several seasons of playing in the Willetton area, the club deemed it appropriate to change its name to Willetton, completing the change in 1988.
